Final Fantasy XIV’s job balance in 2026 is tighter than at any previous point in the game’s history — the difference between S-tier and B-tier jobs in Savage raiding is measured in fraction-of-percent DPS, not meaningful performance gaps. That said, job choice still matters for ease of learning, skill expression, and comfort with the game’s demanding mechanical encounters.
The FFXIV Balance Philosophy
Unlike most MMOs, FFXIV deliberately keeps its jobs close in performance. The development team patches out large DPS outliers quickly. This means:
- Any job can clear any content with a well-prepared party
- Skill expression (player execution) matters more than job choice at 95%+ of content
- Tier list differences are relevant primarily at the absolute top of Savage progression and Ultimate raiding
For the vast majority of players, play the job you enjoy.
DPS Tier List (Savage Raiding Focus)
S-Tier:
- Black Mage — The highest damage ceiling in the game for a melee or ranged DPS at peak execution. Ley Lines management and uptime optimization reward technical mastery. Currently excels in encounters with long stationary phases.
- Reaper — Strong sustained DPS, excellent burst cooldown window with Enshroud, and one of the more forgiving rotation timings of high-tier melee jobs. Excellent for learning Savage raiding.
A-Tier:
- Samurai — Consistent top-3 melee DPS. Kenki gauge management is satisfying and the burst window from Ikishoten into Ogi Namikiri is well-telegraphed.
- Dragoon — High jump cooldowns provide burst windows that align well with party burst phases. Slightly stricter uptime requirement than Reaper.
- Summoner — The most mobile magic DPS. Consistent damage without needing to stand still makes Summoner excellent for mechanics-heavy encounters.
B-Tier (Still Viable Anywhere):
- Bard, Machinist, Dancer, Ninja, Monk
Tank Tier List
S-Tier:
- Warrior — Self-sustain through Bloodwhetting is the best in-class. Warriors require less healer attention than any other tank, which frees healers for DPS during optimized runs.
- Dark Knight — Highest personal damage of any tank. The Edge of Shadow spam during burst phase and Shadowbringer’s AoE capability make Dark Knight the choice for parties prioritizing DPS.
A-Tier:
- Gunbreaker — The most involved tank rotation, but rewarding. Gnashing Fang combos and Blasting Zone timing create a skill expression floor higher than other tanks.
- Paladin — Party mitigation utility (Passage of Arms, Divine Veil) makes Paladin the choice for progression where tank cooldown contribution matters.
Healer Tier List
| Healer | Best For | Key Strength |
|---|---|---|
| White Mage | Beginners | Highest raw healing, simple rotation |
| Scholar | Optimization | Fairy passive healing, best HPS |
| Astrologian | Coordinated parties | Card buffs for DPS alignment |
| Sage | Self-sufficient | Kardia passive healing + good DPS |
Best Job for New FFXIV Players
Red Mage — Not top-tier in Savage but the single best job for learning FFXIV as a new player. Its built-in resurrection ability lets you recover from raises during raids, its rotation is visually clear (Mana gauge fills, then you spend it), and its damage is competitive in normal content. You’ll never be kicked from a party for playing Red Mage.
White Mage — If healing interests you, WHM’s straightforward healing spells teach the fundamentals of FFXIV healer playstyle without complex toolkit management.
The Most Important Improvement That Isn’t Job Choice
Learning the fight before your damage rotation — FFXIV Savage raiding requires near-perfect mechanical execution alongside your DPS rotation. Players who attempt to optimize their DPS before they can reliably resolve mechanics die during burst windows, which eliminates any advantage. Learn the mechanics first, then layer in rotation optimization.
