Elden Ring’s massive build variety is one of its greatest strengths — and one of its biggest sources of player frustration. The wrong starting choices don’t end the game, but they slow your progress significantly. Here’s how to build efficiently from the start.
Best Starting Class for Every Playstyle
Your starting class in Elden Ring only sets your initial stat spread — you can always respec later. That said, choosing a class aligned with your intended playstyle saves Runes and removes unnecessary early friction.
Vagabond — Best all-around starting class. High Vigor and Strength base, starts with a solid straight sword and shield. Recommended for players new to FromSoftware games.
Astrologer — Best for sorcery builds. High Intelligence base, starts with Glintstone Pebble (one of the best early spells). If you want to play a mage, never start as anything else.
Prophet — Best for Faith/Incantation builds. High Faith, access to healing incantations from the start. The most self-sufficient class in the early game.
Prisoner — Best hybrid start. Medium Intelligence and Dexterity, starts with an estoc and access to early Glintstone spells. Ideal for Intelligence-Dex builds (most popular mid-game respec target).
The Three Best Endgame Builds
1. Rivers of Blood Bleed (Arcane)
The most well-known build in Elden Ring history and still excellent in the current patch despite multiple adjustments.
Stat Target (Level 150): Vigor 60, Arcane 80, Dexterity 45, minimum everything else Weapon: Rivers of Blood (Blood Flame Blade for extra bleed buildup) Ashes of War: Corpse Piler Talisman: Lord of Blood’s Exultation, Millicent’s Prosthesis
This build’s strength is the bleed buildup from Corpse Piler combined with Arcane scaling — a single combo cycle builds bleed twice on most bosses, dealing roughly 15% of their HP per proc. It shreds every boss in the game including the DLC content.
2. Moonveil Katana (Intelligence)
The highest single-target DPS build in the game for players who invest in Intelligence.
Stat Target (Level 150): Intelligence 80, Vigor 55, Dexterity 20 (minimum required) Ashes of War: Transient Moonlight — the primary damage source, not a combo finisher Key Ring: Radagon’s Soreseal (stat bonus outweighs damage penalty at this build’s Vigor)
Moonveil’s Transient Moonlight fires horizontal slashes that deal split physical and magic damage — hitting resistances twice. Against most bosses in the game, this represents more damage per FP than any sorcery at equivalent Intelligence investment.
3. Strength Faith (Dragon Communion)
The most durable build in Elden Ring’s endgame — high Vigor + Golden Vow + Dragon Communion incantations create a character who can trade hits with any boss.
Stat Target (Level 150): Faith 45, Strength 50, Vigor 60, Endurance 25 Weapons: Blasphemous Blade (scales with Faith, self-heals on kill) + Dragon Communion Seal Key Incantations: Golden Vow, Flame Grant Me Strength, Ekzykes’s Decay
Stat Priority Rules That Apply to Every Build
- 60 Vigor minimum before level 100. Every build. No exceptions. Being one-shot constantly wastes more time than any damage loss.
- Don’t split your primary damage stat below 60. The soft cap at 60 is where most of your damage returns come from. Splitting between Strength 40 and Intelligence 40 is significantly weaker than 60 in either one.
- 20 Endurance for medium load. Rolling speed matters more than any stat except Vigor. Keep load under 70% of your equip burden.
